What Size Skip Bin Do I Need? A Guide for Tight Driveways and Small Renovations

About to start on a driveway or reno project? Already know you’re going to have a fair amount of old material to shift? It’s time to book a skip.

If you only hire a skip bin once in a blue moon, deciding what size to hire is one of the biggest challenges. But at Rock & Rubble, we help clients choose the right size every day. Here are some tips based on some of the most common questions we get about hiring a skip bin for small renovations.

‍

What Size Skip Bin Do I Need?

The right skip bin size comes down to three things: how much waste you’re likely to generate, what kind of waste it is, and how much room you’ve got to work with. It’s worth thinking about the job as a whole rather than just what you can see at the start.

‍

Choosing a Skip Bin for a Small Renovation

A small bathroom reno or kitchen upgrade can produce a surprising amount of waste, as can garden clean-ups, decluttering jobs and smaller building projects.

‍

The physical size of the project doesn’t always tell you how much space you’ll need in the bin either. Cabinetry, old flooring and fittings create a surprising amount of bulky waste.

‍

And remember, general household and renovation waste is classed differently to heavy construction materials, so check what can go in your chosen bin before booking. There’s nothing worse than finding out after the bin is full.

‍

What About Tight Driveways and Limited Access?

If you’re working in a tight area, the capacity of the skip is only half the equation. You also need to get the bin into place and enough room that it won’t block access during the job.

‍

Before booking a skip bin for a tight driveway, take a good look at the access. Is the driveway wide enough for the delivery vehicle? Is there a gate to get through? Are there cars usually parked nearby? What about low branches, power lines or other overhead obstacles?

‍

A smaller or mini skip bin will have small dimensions, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll fit every driveway. If in doubt, send us a few photos before you book and we can talk it through with you.

‍

How to Choose the Right Skip Bin Before You Book

Working through a few key questions can save a lot of mucking around later.

‍

  • Roughly how much waste are you expecting?
  • What sort of material it is?
  • Where will the bin sit?
  • Do you have enough access?

‍

And most importantly - don’t automatically choose the smallest option just because the project is small. If there’s a chance you’ll run out of space, go for the next size up. You may end up paying for a little more capacity than you need, but it’s a great way to make good friends with your neighbours!
