Built on service, hard work, family, and saying yes.
Ten years ago, Rock and Rubble consisted of a handful of people trying hard to make something work. We didn’t have multiple yards or a large fleet operating across the country. Just a small team with a willingness to say yes and get stuck into a lot of hard work.
As Elvis remembers:
"I started here. There was only Mark, Dan, and I."
Back then, everyone did a bit of everything. It was hands-on, fast-moving, and rough-and-ready at times.
"And I should jump on the loader. And if the truck and trailers come in and I could get off the loader and jump on the digger…either Mark or Dan jumps on the loader."
And, like most growing businesses, there were periods where things felt a bit up in the air. But slowly, the hard work paid off and momentum started building.
"After the first year, it just went up and didn't come down again."
Growth Brings Opportunity And Challenges
As the business grew, so did the opportunities. One truck multiplied into several, and one yard became multiple locations. With that growth, we were able to add new services, bring in new customers, and continue to expand our team.
Today, Rock and Rubble supports everything from civil works and recycling projects to logistics runs, agricultural transport, and bulk material supply.
James joined Rock & Rubble seven years ago, back when the fleet was a fraction of what it is today.
"When I started seven years ago, we had one truck and trailer run. Now we're looking at 25 of our own plus another 30 owner drivers."
Of course, all that growth didn't come without challenges. One notable roadblock was COVID, which arrived right in the middle of expansion plans. The economy tightened, and our systems were tested, meaning as a business, we had to adapt.
Mark reflects on that period:
"We grew very, very quickly, and that brought a bunch of challenges and learnings."
Through it all, we kept working. Whether it was supporting a grape harvest in Marlborough, supplying aggregate to a civil project, or helping customers solve a transport problem, we kept turning up and finding a way to get the job done.

Our Philosophy is to Serve
When we talk to some of the customers who have stayed with us for years, the word ‘service’ comes up time and time again. Not our trucks. Not our aggregate. Service.
Mark explains,
"We sell people's time, we sell service, and that's why we're different."
And Dan echoes the same idea,
"Anyone can do what we do, but it's the service that we sell, not just the product."
That philosophy shows up on every project. We’re always looking for ways to do right by our customers, not just carry out the bare minimum.
"We might be able to get them a cheaper option or one more suited to the job."
It's behind our ‘yes’ when unusual requests come across the desk, and it's there in our company’s willingness to back itself when new opportunities arise.
"If someone offers us an opportunity to do something new, we'll take it full noise."
That mindset has helped us grow well beyond what many people expect from an aggregate supplier.
A Family Business in Every Sense
When we sat down to talk to our team about our ten year anniversary, we also asked them what made them stick around. One of the strongest themes that came out of those interviews was family.
As a family-owned business, you might expect that we feel like one big family, but most of that comes down to our culture, and the loyalty of our team. For us, Rock and Rubble is more than just a workplace, it’s an extension of home.
"We've got sons and fathers and cousins all in the same family."
A great example of this is Elvis' story, who has been with the company almost since the beginning. He came over from Fiji looking for work, and we snapped him up. Nine years later, Elvis is still here and has even brought his son into the business.
"He didn't know how to operate the machine… now he's probably number one in Rock and Rubble."
When asked why he thinks our business has done so well, Elvis answered:
"If the bosses are good, the workers can be good too."
And we think that sums it up perfectly. We treat our staff right, and that means they do their best, and do their best for our customers too.
We Take Pride in the Work
Of course, it’s not just our team we take care of. Step foot on any Rock and Rubble site and you’ll see that our trucks are looked after and the yards are kept tidy. As Dan puts it:
“If you look after your gear, your gear looks after you.”
After all, those trucks aren’t just machinery, they’re rolling billboards. A customer can’t take you seriously if you’ve got no pride in your equipment.
Our people are proud. Proud of the business, proud of the work, and proud of each other.
The Future of Rock and Rubble
Ten years in business is something worth celebrating. Especially in an industry that demands long hours, relentless problem-solving, and the adaptability to think on your feet. While it’s good to look back and see how far we’ve come, Rock & Rubble has always been more focused on what’s next.
There’s still plenty ahead. The future holds more growth and opportunities for us, and as James says,
“We don’t want to say no to anything.”
And maybe that’s the best way to sum up Rock and Rubble over the decade. We’re a business backed by people willing to jump in, work hard, back each other, and keep saying yes.
Long may it continue.
